Mental Health and Wellbeing

As part of our ongoing commitment to the welfare of all pupils, their  families and our staff at #teamabbey, our  dedicated Mental Health and Wellbeing page is here to support and give an overview to how we approach mental health and wellbeing at #teamabbey. Together, we can create a supportive environment that nurtures the mental health and wellbeing of our community.

What does research indicate?

Research indicates that poor mental health can significantly undermine educational attainment. It has been observed that a considerable number of students with emotional and conduct disorders tend to fall behind academically, often missing school or facing exclusion. Alarmingly, one in ten children and young people aged 5 to 16 have a clinically diagnosed mental health disorder, while around one in seven face less severe challenges.

#teamabbey's approach

At #teamabbey, we firmly believe that the mental health and wellbeing of all members of our community—staff, students, and parents alike—are fundamental to our ethos of 'Inspire, Believe, Achieve.' Our aims are to foster an environment where mental health is prioritised and stigma is reduced, allowing students to engage fully in their learning.

We have adopted a whole-school approach that promotes positive mental health and wellbeing. Our commitment extends to recognising warning signs amongst students, as well as providing continuous professional development for our staff. We also support students and their families, emphasising the development of resilience and confidence.

To assist students in navigating their mental health challenges, we offer a range of services, including signposting to resources on our website's Mental Health and Wellbeing section. Our Class Teams and dedicated Wellbeing Team are attentive to behavioural changes that may signal distress, and we encourage open lines of communication.

In addition, we have designated staff members who have volunteered as Health and Wellbeing Champions. They are trained to support students facing mental health difficulties. Our Personal Development curriculum integrates mental health education, providing students with strategies to manage their emotional health while enhancing their resilience and confidence.
