As an academy, the Academy Council of Abbey School has delegated powers from the Nexus Multi Academy Trust Board of Directors, which are outlined in the Trust’s Scheme of Delegation
The Chief Executive Officer and Officers of the Trust act as advisers to the Academy Council and attend most meetings
Membership
Abbey School Academy Council was constituted on 1st June 2016 and the following structure of Governance is now in place:
Academy Council
The total membership shall be not less than 7 and not more than 12.
The membership shall comprise:
- The Chair who is elected by the Trust Board of Directors;
- The Headteacher;
- No fewer than 2 elected Parent Governors;
- Two elected Members of Staff, one Teaching, one Non-Teaching;
- The remaining Governors are appointed by the Academy Council. Governors can be Parents or Members of Staff but the number of Staff Governors (inc Headteacher) must not exceed one-third of the total number of Governors.
How are Governors chosen?
There are different categories of Governors:
Parent Governors, Staff Governors and Governors.
Parent Governors are elected by current parents when a vacancy becomes available. Staff Governors, are representatives of the teaching or support staff and are elected by the eligible staff when a vacancy becomes available. All Governors are appointed by the Academy Council.
They are selected to provide skills and experience which Governors feel are required.
The Chair of the Academy Council is appointed by the Nexus Multi Academy Trust Board of Directors.
All Governors initially serve for a period of four years. At the end of the four years, they can stand for re-election or be re-appointed. Governors are free to resign before the end of their four-year term if they so wish.

Luci joined #teamabbey in 2015 and has always been passionate about working with children who have additional needs. Luci has a special interest in Autism due to starting her career as an ABA therapist, She has 2 young children herself and when she isn’t picking them up and dropping them off she enjoys reading and spending time with her family. Luci feels privileged to lead #teamabbey as Headteacher and thinks she has the best job in the world! |

My name is Janine and I have 3 children. My 2 eldest are in mainstream and my youngest is at Abbey. I have worked in many schools on a voluntary and paid basis as a sports and activities coach and have helped on many a school trip. My main interests as a governor are inclusion, emotional well-being and bridging the gaps, particularly with LAC and previous LAC. My parent governor role at Abbey is attached to the Horizon Hub and to learn more about how our Hub children integrate in and access mainstream lessons. |

Ivy Dorchester-Brown (Upper School and Wellbeing Gov) Ivy is a Primary PE Consultant working for Yorkshire Sport Foundation supporting primary schools in embedding high quality PE in their schools using the PE and School Sport Premium Funding leading to sustainability. She has worked as a Secondary PE teacher and Head of Upper School for 28 years in Rotherham,as well as SSCo for 7 years and then PDM for the Rawmarsh School Sport Partnership. She is passionate about the development of PE, Physical Activity, School Sport, mental health and well being for everyone-both staff and pupils. |

Jim has extensive experience in delivering employment and training related services for people with disabilities and health issues. He has been in senior management at local, regional and national level with public, private sector and 3rd sector organisations before his retirement a short while ago. Jim has a passion for seeing that everyone has a sense of fairness and would like to offer his support to the Abbey students’ progression from education into employment. |

My name is Ian, and I am extremely proud to be a parent governor for Abbey School. I am currently a headteacher at a Primary School in Rotherham, and I hope my experience of working, and living with children that have Moderate Learning difficulties will be beneficial when contributing towards the governing bodies decisions. I am excited to work with the outstanding Leadership team and hope to add value to the school community. Ian is enthusiastic, passionate, caring and brings with him a wealth of work experience in School Improvement, Teaching & Learning, Pupil Premium and Sports Grant. |

Frequency
The Academy Council meets at least once a half term, with additional meetings being arranged as required.
